Fleetly — Apple Watch

Fleet managers aren't always behind a dashboard. They're walking across yards, inspecting vehicles, talking to drivers, or handling breakdowns. I designed Fleetly for Apple Watch to surface the most important fleet information exactly when it's needed without taking out a phone.

Problem Statement

A fleet emergency won't wait for someone to unlock their phone.

A fleet emergency won't wait for someone to unlock their phone.

Fleetly's mobile experience already allowed fleet managers to ask questions using AI and access operational insights. But during field operations, even opening the mobile app introduced unnecessary friction.

Fleet managers constantly switch between vehicles, workshops, dispatch areas and meetings. In these moments they don't need an entire dashboard, they need immediate answers.

Questions like

  • Which vehicles need attention?

  • Are there any critical faults?

  • How many trucks are moving?

  • Has a safety event occurred?

The opportunity wasn't creating another app. It was extending Fleetly into moments where speed matters the most.

Activities

  • Existing product audit

  • Apple Watch UX research

  • Feature prioritisation

  • Information architecture

  • Watch connectivity flow

  • High-fidelity prototyping

Defining Problem Statement

Fleet managers weren't asking for another device. They wanted fewer interruptions. The challenge became identifying which information deserves a place on the wrist and which belongs on the phone. Instead of shrinking the mobile interface, I redesigned the experience around watch-first interactions.

Research

Understanding moments instead of screens.

Understanding moments instead of screens.

Understanding moments instead of screens.

Unlike mobile apps, watch apps are opened for only a few seconds. Every interaction has to answer a question immediately.

I analysed Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, studied existing fleet workflows and identified the moments where users naturally reached for quick information.

Fleet managers don't need dashboards on their wrist.

They need confidence in under five seconds.

Opportunity mapping

Designing for moments where every second matters.

After identifying the most common field interactions, I mapped every operational need against two criteria:

  • Frequency — How often the information is needed throughout the day.

  • Watch Suitability — Whether the interaction could be completed within a few seconds.

Rather than recreating every Fleetly feature, I prioritised experiences that benefited most from immediate accessibility. The result was a focused Apple Watch companion that surfaces only the most actionable information while leaving detailed workflows to the mobile app.

Information architecture

One ecosystem. Two devices. One continuous experience.

One ecosystem. Two devices. One continuous experience.

One ecosystem. Two devices. One continuous experience.

Fleetly Watch was never intended to replace the mobile application.

Instead, it extends Fleetly into situations where reaching for a phone interrupts the user's workflow.

The information architecture focuses on progressive disclosure showing essential operational information first, while allowing users to move deeper only when necessary.

Every screen is designed to answer a single question, keeping navigation lightweight and interactions effortless.

Competitive landscape

Where companion experiences usually stop.

Most fleet management platforms treat smartwatch apps as notification mirrors or simplified dashboards. They provide basic vehicle counts or alerts but rarely rethink the experience for a wearable device.

Fleetly Watch was designed differently.

Instead of replicating the mobile application, it focuses on the moments where a watch provides the greatest value—quick awareness, conversational access, and immediate action.

Design system

Clarity. Speed. Confidence.

Clarity. Speed. Confidence.

Designing for Apple Watch meant embracing constraints rather than fighting them.

Every component was created to reduce cognitive load, improve readability, and allow fleet managers to understand operational health within seconds.

Rather than scaling down mobile UI, I rebuilt the experience around watch-first interaction patterns, ensuring every screen remained glanceable, touch-friendly, and instantly understandable.
